ROCHESTER, NY – Three Empire 8 student-athletes were named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 17 for their tremendous performances last weekend. The College at Brockport cornerback Raylens Boutin, St. John Fisher College defensive end John Cleary and Alfred University linebacker Nick Milgate all earned the prestigious weekly honor.
Boutin, a freshman, took his first two collegiate interceptions back for touchdowns, just four minutes apart in the third quarter, as the Brockport defense blanked visiting Framingham State in a 14-0 win Saturday. He finished with six tackles, five solo, and one tackle for loss. Boutin was named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Cleary, a senior, helped to all but eliminate the running game for Bridgewater State as St. John Fisher moved to 2-0 behind a 35-28 win on Saturday. As a team, Fisher allowed just seven yards on the ground with Cleary leading the charge. He finished with seven tackles in the win including four for a loss and a game-high two and a half sacks. Cleary also forced and recovered a fumble and was credited with two quarterback hurries.
Milgate, a senior captain, led the Alfred defense in the Saxons' home-opening win against George Fox Saturday. He helped keep the Bruins total offense under 200 yards with only 192, including just 63 yards in the air. Milgate totaled 13 tackles on the day with 10 of them being solo accomplishments. He had six tackles for a loss totaling minus-26 yards and two sacks. Milgate recorded a crucial 11-yard sack during George Fox's final drive of the game, to force a fourth-down conversion attempt from the Bruins that was unsuccessful.
Empire 8 Football is off to a great start in 2019, with its seven member institutions a combined 11-3. Alfred, SUNY Cortland, St. John Fisher and Utica are all 2-0. Six of the seven teams are back in action this weekend, as conference play officially kicks off on Oct. 5.
