Conference Play for Several Empire 8 Sports to Get Underway

ROCHESTER, NY – League play for Empire 8 women’s volleyball begins with a single match on Wednesday, Sept. 18, while field hockey, men’s soccer and women’s soccer are scheduled to get underway on Saturday, Sept. 21 with a full slate of action.

Hartwick heads to Elmira to kick off the E8 women’s volleyball league schedule on Sept. 18. Full conference play begins next weekend, Sept. 27-28. Nazareth is the defending Empire 8 Champion. The top four teams in regular season league play will qualify for the 2019 Empire 8 Women’s Volleyball Championship, which will be held on Nov. 9-10 at the site of the regular season champion.
 
Washington and Jefferson College is looking for its third straight field hockey title, while both men’s and women’s soccer will have a new champion crowned in 2019. St. John Fisher enters the weekend as the lone undefeated field hockey team in non-conference play with a 4-0 record, while Hartwick is right behind at 4-1 and Elmira is 4-2. The 2019 Empire 8 Field Hockey Championship is scheduled for Nov. 9-10 with the top four finishers in regular season league play qualifying to play at the regular season champion.
 
All eight Empire 8 men’s and women’s soccer teams are in action this weekend. Utica has the best current non-conference record among all Empire 8 men’s soccer schools at 4-1-1, while Nazareth is 4-2-1 and Elmira holds a 3-2-1 mark. On the women’s side, the Pioneers are also off to an excellent 5-1 mark, while Nazareth (4-1) and Alfred (4-1-1) also have just one blemish on their records. Five women’s teams have winning records in non-conference play. The top four teams in Empire 8 regular season play qualify for postseason play. Semifinals for both the men’s and women’s soccer championships will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 6 with the championship game set for Saturday, Nov. 9.
 
Women’s tennis was the lone sport to start league play last weekend. The 2019 Empire 8 Women’s Tennis Championship is slated for Oct. 18-19 at Nazareth. The top-four seeds advance with a berth in the 2020 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships on the line for the league champion.
 
Football begins league competition on Oct. 5. The College at Brockport is looking for its third straight E8 crown. The seven Empire 8 football schools have combined to go 11-3 over the first two weeks of the season.
