ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore safety Jason Rodriguez of the St. John Fisher College football team was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Rodriguez, also named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week, recorded two interceptions in St. John Fisher’s 40-16 win over The College of New Jersey on Saturday. Both interceptions led to touchdown drives for the Cardinals who scored 35 unanswered points in the second half to erase an 11-point halftime deficit. Rodriguez, who had 32 return yards on the two interceptions, also finished with three tackles.
A native of Corning, NY, Rodriguez leads Division III with five interceptions through just three games this season. The Cardinals have nine interceptions as a team in 2019, which is also tied for the most among all Division III programs.
Rodriguez is the fourth different student-athlete from the Empire 8 to earn D3football.com Team of the Week accolades this season.
Empire 8 Football is off to a strong start in 2019, as SUNY Cortland and St. John Fisher are currently unbeaten and five teams have winning records.
