Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on Jan. 6, 2020 for games played from Dec. 31-Jan. 5. It is the 18th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2019-20 season.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Austin Haskell, Hartwick, Jr., F, Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley
Haskell averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds in a pair of Hartwick victories during the week, which included a dominating showing in the 2019-20 conference opening win over Elmira. He shot 63 percent from the floor on 12-of-19 shooting with three assists and two steals for the week. After registering eight points and seven boards in a 76-68 win over SUNY Delhi on Thursday, Haskell exploded for game-highs of 28 points and 13 rebounds in the Hawks’ 71-64 win over the Soaring Eagles on Saturday. His 28 points were just shy of a career-high and his 13 rebounds matched a career-best. Haskell would score 17 points in the second half alone as the Hawks rallied from a six-point deficit. He finished the game shooting 77% (10-for-13) from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jordan Holmes, Houghton, Jr., G/F, Rochester, NY/Fairport
Holmes scored 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field including a prolific 5-of-9 showing from beyond the arc in the Highlanders 83-61 victory over SUNY-ESF on Saturday. He also went 6-for-7 from the free throw line, notched six rebounds, and added an assist. Holmes was sensational in the second half, pouring in 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field with three made 3-pointers, while converting 6-of-7 attempts from the foul line. Holmes leads the Highlanders in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game in 2019-20.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Billy McCrae, Houghton, Fr., F, Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township
McCrae scored a career high 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field to go along with six rebounds and an assist in the Highlanders 83-61 victory over SUNY-ESF on Saturday. McCrae poured in 12 points in each half to lift the Highlanders to the win. He is averaging 8.2 points and 5.0 boards per game this season.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kaitlyn Bowman, Sage, Gr., G/F, Chateaugay, NY/Saranac
Bowman averaged 19.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game, while shooting 56.5 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the line in three games for the Gators. She stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, nine boards and six assists in a win over Coast Guard on Dec. 31. Bowman recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 points versus Mount St. Mary on Thursday. She capped off the week by pouring in a career-high 33 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field to go along with 15 made free throws versus Suffolk Saturday. The 33 points are the most scored by an Empire 8 player this season. Bowman surpassed the 800 career-point plateau as well and is now 13th all-time at Sage with 820 points and fourth with 657 rebounds.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Taylor Johnson, Elmira, Fr., G, Johnson City, NY/Johnson City
Johnson logged her first career double-double with career highs totals of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while making her first career start in Elmira's Empire 8 opener versus Hartwick on Saturday, She shot 6-of-12 from the field and six of her rebounds came on the offensive glass. Johnson also added two steals and one block.
MEN’S SWIMMNG & DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Diallo Marshall, Hartwick, Fr., Freestyle/Breaststroke, Saint George, Antigua & Barbuda/St. Anthony’s
Marshall was a part of three wins during Hartwick's dual meet victory at Cortland. Individually, he won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, with times of 22.29 and 50.70 seconds, respectively. He also swam the anchor 50-free of the 200-yard medley relay, closing out the Hawks' victory. Marshall also swam the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 49.27 second split.
WOMEN’S SWIMMNG & DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Tori Argentieri, Hartwick, Sr., Butterfly/IM/Backstroke, East Amherst, NY/Clarence
Argentieri won all three of her individual races in Saturday's meet at Cortland. She grabbed victories in both butterfly events, winning the 100-fly with a time of 1:02.19 and the 200-fly by touching up in 2:17.28. She also claimed first in the meet's final individual event, the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 2:20.68.
