Empire 8 Conference Players of the Week – February 10, 2020

Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on Feb. 10, 2020 for games played from Feb. 4-Feb. 9. It is the 23rd Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2019-20 season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jalon Borders, Sage, So., G, Bartow, FL/Bartow
Borders led Sage to a 2-0 week in conference play, averaging 24.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 69 percent from the floor. He began the week by scoring 24 points to go along with seven boards and four assists in a win over Houghton Saturday. On Sunday, Borders once again poured in 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting with nine rebounds and two steals in a 73-47 win over Alfred. Borders is fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per game in 2019-20.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Charles Davis, Sage, Fr., F, Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou Harner
Davis helped Sage to a 2-0 week, averaging 18.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 63.6 percent from the floor and 80.0 percent from the foul line. On Sunday, Davis recorded 18 points and 10 boards off the bench to lift Sage past Alfred, while shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the line. In addition, Davis added 18 points in a decisive win over Houghton Saturday.
 
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Mary Schoenherr, Hartwick, Jr., G, Unionville, CT/Farmington
Schoenherr averaged 22.0 points on 48.1 percent shooting versus St. John Fisher and Nazareth over the weekend. On Saturday, Schoenherr scored a career-best 23 points to go along with five rebounds, two steals, and an assist on the day versus E8 leader St. John Fisher. In Sunday's important comeback win over the Golden Flyers, Schoenherr put up the second-highest point total of her career, with 21. She also led her side with seven rebounds and had five assists to move her into seventh on the program's all-time list with 323 for her career.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Ana Ion, Alfred, Fr., G, Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville
Ion averaged 11.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, while converting on five 3-pointers for the Saxons. She scored 15 points at Utica on Saturday and added eight points and five boards at Sage Sunday. Ion is averaging 11.7 points per game in 2019-20.
 
MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Daniel Norris, St. John Fisher, Sr., Sprints, Guilford, NY/Bainbridge-Guilford
Norris broke his own program record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.02 seconds at the Brockport Invitational Saturday. The time ranks as the fastest in the conference and fourth regionally.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kyle Rollins, St. John Fisher, Jr., Sprints/Jumps, Groveland, NY/Geneseo
Rollins won two competitions while breaking a program record in another event at the Brockport Invitational on Saturday. He cleared 2.15 meters to win the high jump, which also ranks as the top performance in all of Division III this season. He also won the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.45 seconds. In addition, Rollins broke the program record in the triple jump with a leap of 14.61 meters. That mark ranks first in the E8 and sixth in the nation.
 
WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Erin Reyner, Nazareth, So., Distance, Apalachin, NY/Vestal
Reyner was first in the 3,000-meter run at the Brockport Invitational by five seconds, crossing the finish line in a time of 10:43.03. It is the fastest time among all Empire 8 student-athletes this season in the 3,000-meters.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Laura Meade, Utica, So., Jumps, Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville
Meade won the triple jump at Saturday's Blue and Orange Invitational hosted by Utica. She posted a new personal best in the event of 11.32 meters for her second straight E8 weekly honor. Before Saturday, Meade had never exceeded 11 meters during her career. That mark moves her up to 23rd nationally, while also holding a dominant Empire 8 conference lead.
 
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Shane Wenz, Sage, Sr., MH, Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane
Wenz had a tremendous week, leading Sage to a 3-1 mark. In the first match of the week, Wenz set a Sage single-match record with 27 kills in a win over SUNY-Poly. In addition, he added another 20-kill performance in Sage's win over Wilkes. For the week, he recorded 75.0 points with 71 kills, 34 digs, and 5 total blocks. Wenz averaged 4.73 kills per set and 2.27 digs in 15 total sets played.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Kaleb Luton, Nazareth, Fr., MB/RS, Amherst, NY/Sweet Home
Luton hit .237 while recording 38 kills and 12 blocks in four matches over the weekend for the Golden Flyers at the 15th Annual Nazareth Invitational. He had at least eight kills in all four matches, including 12 versus Geneva and 10 against UC-Santa Cruz. Luton hit .357 with eight kills and six blocks against Lasell.
