Nazareth College is in the lead after the opening day of the 2020 Empire 8 and Allegheny Empire Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Webster Aquatic Center and hosted by Hartwick College. The Golden Flyers won three of four finals events to open the championship and have 244 points to lead second place Hartwick by 34. Alfred is third with 109 points, while Utica is fourth with 69. Nazareth and Hartwick are also 1-2 in the 10-team Allegheny Empire Championship standings.
Abby Miller of Hartwick led a 1-2 finish for the Hawks in the 500-yard freestyle relay to open the meet before Nazareth took over with wins in the final three events. First-year Abbie Santos rolled to a decisive win in the 200-yard individual medley, while teammate Taylor Robey earned the win in the 50-yard freestyle for the third straight season, recording a blistering NCAA “B” cut time of 23.43. It was the second fastest winning time in Empire 8 history. Nazareth’s 200-yard medley relay team of Kat Benz, Molly Schoemick, Santos and Robey concluded the evening with a victory. It was Nazareth’s third straight team win in the 200-yard medley relay.
Day two action continues on Thursday from the Webster Aquatic Center, with preliminary action starting at 10 a.m. and the finals getting underway at 5:30 p.m.
