St. John Fisher won eight of nine events on Saturday to pull away and claim the 2019-20 Empire 8 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by Houghton College on Feb. 28-29. The Cardinals finished with 220 points to win their third championship in program history. Utica was the runner-up with 133.50 points.
Junior Kyle Rollins led the way for the Cardinals, winning all three jumping events to earn 2020 Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet honors. On Friday, Rollins took the long jump with a leap of 6.93 meters and on Saturday, won his third straight high jump crown, clearing 2.04 meters, while setting an E8 meet record in the triple jump, leaping 14.52 meters. He was also the 2019 Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and 2018 Rookie of the Year.
Utica senior distance runner Mitch Marlow, the 2019 Empire 8 Cross Country Runner of the Year, added the 2020 Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet honors to his resume. He won a pair of individual events on Friday, including the mile run in a time of 4:27.29 and 5,000-meters, crossing the finish line in 15:33.43. On Saturday, Marlow won the 3,000 meters, crossing the finish line in 8:50.21.
Eddie Mahana and Daniel Norris of St. John Fisher also won a pair of events on the weekend. Mahana won the 60-meter hurdles in a championship record 8.02 seconds, which is also a top-five time in Division III this season. Mahana also took the 400-meters on Friday. Norris won both the 60-meter and 200-meter dash events on Saturday. Mahana also was also part of the winning 4 x 400-meter relay team.
