St. John Fisher leads the pack after day one of the 2019-20 Empire 8 Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by Houghton College on Friday, Feb. 28. St. John Fisher has 77 points, just ahead of second-place Utica, who has 57 points. Four teams are separated by less than 50 points.
The Cardinals won three events on the evening. Senior Gabriella Dunkelberg kicked off action with a narrow win in the mile with a time of 5:28.16. First-year Riley Corey picked up the win in the 5,000-meters, crossing the finish line in 18:34.21, while junior Jordan Lehman garnered the win in the shot put with a toss of 11.95 meters.
A pair of Utica field standouts, Kelsey Wands and Meghan Romaguera earned wins on Friday. Wands took the long jump, with a leap of 5.59 meters, while Romaguera took the pole vault, clearing 3.10 meters.
Nazareth sophomore Brenna Johnson, the 2019 E8 Indoor Track Rookie of the Year, won the 400-meter dash for the second straight season, hitting the finish line in 59.70 seconds.
Host Houghton won the medley relay, as the team of Madelyn Kruth, Alexandra Wismiewski, Gwen Stokes, Leah O’Connell cross the finish line first in 13:16.53.
