St. John Fisher Claims First Empire 8 Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship in Program History

St. John Fisher earned its first Empire 8 Indoor Track & Field Championship in program history, taking the 2019-20 E8 title, hosted by Houghton College on Feb. 28-29. St. John Fisher finished with a team total of 165.50 points, just ahead of second-place Utica, who recorded 133.50 points.
 
The Cardinals used a balanced attack throughout the lineup to win their first league title. On Friday, Senior Gabriella Dunkelberg kicked off action with a narrow win in the mile with a time of 5:28.16. First-year Riley Corey picked up wins in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter championships, with winning times of 10:43.51 and 18:34.21, respectively. Senior Tayler Dence won her third straight E8 60-meter hurdles crown, while  junior Jordan Lehman garnered the win in the shot put.
 
A pair of Utica field standouts, first-year Eshone Cofield-Jackson and sophomore Katrina Cornick swept the individual awards. Cofield-Jackson was named Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet after winning the 60-meter (7.97 seconds) and 200-meter dash (25.55 seconds) events, in addition to leading the Pioneers to a snappy time of 4:06.42 in the 4 x 400-meter relay. Cofield-Jackson was also runner-up in the 400-meter dash (1:00.44).
 
Cornick garnered Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet accolades after winning the weight throw with a toss of 15.33 meters, while placing third overall in the shot put (11.78 meters).
 
Houghton’s Edena Sanchez won her second consecutive Empire 8 Championship in the 800-meters.
