Empire 8 Conference Players of the Week – March 16, 2020

Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on March 16, 2020 for games played from March 9-March 15. It is the 28th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2019-20 season.
 
MEN’S LACROSSE
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Robert Martin, Sage, So., A, Saugerties, NY/Saugerties
Martin scored 10 goals in a pair of contests last week, including the game-winner in a victory over Cazenovia. He added five ground balls as well. Martin scored six times in a win over Cazenovia and added four more goals versus Hood College. He now holds Sage’s career marks with 44 goals, 37 assists and 81 points. He leads the Gators in scoring during the 2020 season with 25 goals and 28 points.
 
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jonathan Mayer, Houghton, Jr., A, Palm Harbor, FL/Palm Harbor
Mayer led the Highlanders with nine points on a career-high seven goals to go along with two assists in Houghton's 21-12 win over Keystone College on Tuesday. In addition, Mayer picked up three ground balls and caused five turnovers. He has 16 goals and 22 points in five games this season.
 
GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Alex Winkler, Nazareth, Sr., GK, Fort Collins, CO/Fort Collins
Winkler posted 16 saves and an impressive .640 save percentage, as Nazareth won twice during its spring break trip to Florida. He made five saves in a relief role during a 17-11 win over DeSales last Tuesday. Winkler followed that up by playing all 60 minutes of a 23-7 win over Wooster on Saturday and made 11 saves.
 
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Marissa Hews, Houghton, Sr., A, Norwood, PA/Interboro
Hews recorded a career-high 12 points (one shy of Houghton’s single-game record), scoring seven goals and adding five assists as the Highlanders defeated Hilbert 23-4. She tallied five goals and an assist in the first half and followed that up with two goals and four assists in the second half. Hews has 35 points on 21 goals and 14 assists in five games in 2020.
 
GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Claudia Mocciaro, St. John Fisher, Jr., GK, Syracuse, NY/West Genesee
Mocciaro posted a career-high 12 saves while limiting No. 23 Cortland to five goals in a 9-5 win on Wednesday. She stopped four-of-six free position shots in the game. Mocciaro moved to 3-0 on the season with a 3.63 goals against average and a .667 save percentage.
 
SOFTBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ashley Lugo, Alfred, So., SS, Hesperia, CA/Oak Hills
Lugo showed a little bit of everything this past week in Florida. The leadoff hitter led the team with a .444 batting average (12-for-27), two home runs, nine runs scored, and nine stolen bases. She hit safely in nine of her 11 games played, tallying three hits against Penn. State-Hazleton and Minnesota-Morris. Lugo hit her second and third career home runs against Haverford and Minnesota-Morris (3/14), respectively, and also stole a career-high four bases against Hazleton. Lugo has a .441 batting average (15-of-34) with 12 stolen bases, 11 runs scored, two homers and five RBI this season.
 
PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Jessica Wilcox, Alfred, Sr., P, Forestville, NY/Pine Valley
Wilcox enjoyed an incredible week, posting an 0.88 earned-run average in 31.2 innings pitched, going 4-2. She struck out an impressive 49 batters, while only walking three. She saved her best for the end, striking out a season-best 13 batters against Concordia-Chicago on Friday, then recorded the first perfect game in Alfred University history in perhaps her last start, striking out 12 Minnesota Morris batters on Saturday. She also set the program record for career strikeouts against Penn State-Hazleton on March 9 and has an overall total of 396 K’s in her Alfred tenure.
 
MEN’S TENNIS
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ryan Lalik, Nazareth, So., Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley
Lalik won all five of his sixth singles matches last week during the Golden Flyers' spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. He won in straight sets against competitors from Webster University, Westminster and Mount Union and captured pro-set wins over players from Penn State Harrisburg and Greenville. Lalik finished the season with a 7-3 overall record in singles matches.
 
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Martin Hackford, St. John. Fisher, Jr., OH, Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park
Hackford broke a program record with eight service aces to lead the No. 9 Cardinals to a straight-sets win over Elmira on Wednesday. He also recorded eight kills, four digs and two total blocks for a 17-point evening (5.67 points per set).
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Neiram Galan-Canales, Elmira, Fr., S, San Juan Puerto Rico/EEBA Pablo Casals
Galan-Canales dished out 11 assists to go along with three digs and a block versus No. 9 St. John Fisher on Wednesday. He has logged double-digit assists in five consecutive matches and six of the seven total contests this season. It is his third E8 weekly accolade of the 2020 season.
