Elmira College Associate Vice President of Athletics
Renee Carlineo announced on Tuesday the appointment of
Greg Margolis, Ph.D., as head coach of the men's and women's soccer programs.
"We are thrilled to have Greg join our Soaring Eagles team," said Carlineo. "Greg comes to us during a very challenging time in higher education and college athletics. I cannot think of a more qualified and well-rounded leader to head both our men's and women's teams this fall."
"I couldn't be happier to take over these two programs at Elmira College," said Margolis. "I want to thank Renee and the entire search committee for their due diligence, and making my experience throughout this process so informative and welcoming. Both of these programs are filled with incredible student-athletes who are ready to compete and perform at a high level, and I cannot wait to get started with them. It has been my dream to be a collegiate head coach, and I believe this is a place that fosters empowered, competitive, and successful student-athletes."
Margolis, a first-year head coach with eight years of collegiate coaching experience as an assistant, comes to Elmira from New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) powerhouse Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. During his time with the Williams women's program, Margolis was responsible for recruiting, scouting, performed sports psychology on a group and individual basis, and assisted in all practice and game planning, with a focus on the defensive tactical setup for the team. He helped the Ephs reach the 2019 NCAA Quarterfinals and obtain a national year-end ranking of No. 13. He also coached the NESCAC Player of the Year and a pair of United Soccer Coaches All-Americans.
Prior to Williams, Margolis served as the assistant coach for the women's soccer team at Allegheny College (2018-19) and men's soccer team at Methodist University (2017-18). Similar to his role at Williams, Margolis was responsible for the recruiting efforts, scouting, tactical analysis, and culture building at both programs.
His start in the collegiate coaching world began in 2012 with the men's soccer program at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. His first stint in the college ranks provided the foundation for his career, as he performed various roles ranging from budget management to recruiting during his four-year stay from 2012-16. During that span, Margolis coached 15 All-Conference recipients, three conference Players of the Year, 15 Academic All-Conference honorees, and on the team level, helped Springfield capture the 2016 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) title, as well as a pair of ECAC New England Regional championships. Additionally, six student-athletes would later go on to play soccer in the professional ranks.
Margolis is a 2012 graduate from Ursinus College with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science with a Minor in Coaching. He then acquired a Master of Science in Sport and Exercise Psychology, as well as a Doctorate of Philosophy in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Springfield in 2014 and 2017, respectively. He also owns United States Soccer Federation D & F Licenses, United States Soccer Federation Grassroots 4v4, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11 Licenses, and a United Soccer Coaches Goalkeeper Level 1 Diploma.
In addition to his collegiate coaching career, Margolis served as the head coach for the Liberty Point U16 team in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the Operations Coordinator for the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer, and a Cognitive Performance Coach for the United States Military.
