The Elmira College baseball team captured a Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) for the third consecutive year in 2019-20.
Elmira was one of 110 NCAA Division III programs recognized by the ABCA with 2019-20 Team Academic Excellence Award, and one of a record 427 programs across all levels of collegiate and high school baseball to receive the honor. Furthermore, EC was the only Empire 8 Conference institution to claim the prestigious award for the second year in a row.
In order to be eligible for the Team Academic Excellence Award, a team's head coach must be a current ABCA member, and the program must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale in 2019-20. The Soaring Eagles qualified with a superb 3.20 GPA, an improvement of 11-hundredths of a point from the previous year.
Elmira's success in the classroom was applauded earlier this summer, when the Empire 8 crowned the Purple and Gold with All-Academic Team honors and named 11 baseball student-athletes to the spring edition of the E8 President's List, which required a GPA of at least 3.75 in the spring semester.
The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/Diamond Regional and National Coaches of the Year, and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
