ROCHESTER, NY - Down 2-1 late in the second half, Sory Konate's goals in the 78th and 82nd minutes helped the Utica College men's soccer team complete its comeback over the St. John Fisher Cardinals to pull out a 3-2 win.
Fisher found the board first in the 13th minute when Jackson Bishop scored his second goal of the season to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 advantage. The Pioneers settled in throughout the remainder of the first half and just as it seemed they would head into the half down 1-0, Ramazani Juma had other intentions.
The senior evened the score at one in the 43rd minute off of a free kick, also marking his first goal of the season. In the 59th minute, Fisher regained the lead when Bishop netted his second goal of the game on a chip shot from about five yards out.
Utica applied pressure on the Fisher defense all second half, attempting 10 shots to the Cardinals' four. In the 78th minute, one of those shots found the back of the net. Sory Konate answered the bell and tied the game at two after a slight deflection from a Fisher defender helped guide the ball in.
Six minutes later, Juma found an open Konate over the middle of the field and Konate connected from 17 yards out for his third goal of the season and a 3-2 Pioneers lead. Utica held on from there to secure the 3-2 comeback win while moving back to .500 on the season and in Empire 8 play.
The two goal scorers, Juma and Konate, attempted six of the team's 11 shots on goal while Juma attempted seven of the team's 18 shots overall. In goal, Foti Xidias recorded three saves for the Pioneers.
UC (5-5-1, 2-2 Empire 8) is on the road again on Saturday when the team travels to Alfred University for a 1 p.m. game against the Saxons.
