Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on October 18, 2021, for games played from October 11-October 17. It is the seventh Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2021-22 season. Sports featured include men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Grant Stokoe, St. John Fisher, Sr., Cortland, NY/Homer
Stokoe led the way for the Cardinals in the Rowan University Inter-Regional Battle, as his 22nd place finish and final time of 25:54.0 was a new personal best by nearly 10 seconds for the senior in an 8,000-meter race. He recorded a speedy 5:13 mile pace to earn his fourth E8 weekly honor of the fall.
 
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Riley Corey, St. John Fisher, Jr., Waterloo, NY/Waterloo
Corey led the St. John Fisher College women's cross country team to an eighth place finish at Saturday's Rowan University Inter-Regional Battle. Corey was the Cardinals best finisher in the morning's 6,000-meter race, as she crossed the finish line in 22:48.6 while averaging a 6:08 mile pace for her fourth E8 weekly accolade this fall.
 
FIELD HOCKEY
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Bailey Selman, Nazareth, Jr., F, Fairfield, PA/Fairfield
Selman provided all of the offense for Nazareth on Saturday, scoring three goals as the Golden Flyers upended Houghton by a score of 3-1 to move into fourth place in the Empire 8 standings. Selman tied the game at 1-1 with 4:23 left in the first half, gave Nazareth the lead for good with her second goal of the game early in the fourth quarter and completed the hat-trick by adding an insurance marker with 2:25 remaining.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sophia Trozzi, St. John Fisher, So., GK, Warminster, PA/William Tennent
Trozzi picked up two more wins in goal last week and helped the Cardinals clinch a postseason berth with wins over Keuka and Hartwick. Trozzi played all 124 minutes in goal for the Cardinals and earned one shutout in all. She made five saves in St. John Fisher’s 2-1 overtime win over Hartwick Saturday to keep the Cardinals in first place in the Empire 8 standings.
 
FOOTBALL
CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Max Freeman IV, Alfred, Fr., RB, Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post
Freeman IV rushed for 167 yards, almost doubling the efforts of any other rusher on the day as Alfred earned a 38-35 win at St. John Fisher. Freeman rushed the ball 22 times, averaging 7.6 yards a carry to lead the Saxons to their third win in a row. Freeman had a long gain of 53 yards and a 49-yard burst that set up the Saxons game-winning score. He also scored a touchdown in the first half that tied the game up at 14-14 going into halftime.
 
CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jala Coad, Brockport, Fr., RB, Amityville, NY/Amityville
Coad carried the ball 38 times for 167 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns to lead the way for Brockport in Saturday's 26-14 home win over Utica. His 13-yard second quarter touchdown catch gave Brockport a 10-0 lead and he also helped the Golden Eagles secure the victory with a one-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to earn his second E8 weekly honor of 2021. Coad has scored at least one touchdown in all six games this season. He leads the conference and ranks ninth nationally in both total rushing yards (804) and rushing yards per game (134.0). He also leads the league and ranks in the top 25 nationally with 10 total touchdowns this season.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Dylan Dubuque, Cortland, Sr., LB, East Greenbush, NY/Columbia
Dubuque recorded seven solo tackles, including two sacks and three total tackles for losses, in Cortland's 48-3 win at Hartwick. He also forced a fumble, and blocked a punt that the Red Dragons returned for a touchdown. Cortland's defense held Hartwick to 152 yards of total offense, including minus-13 yards rushing.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Tysean Sizer, St. John Fisher, Sr., KR/PR, Rochester, NY/Irondequoit
Sizer made history on Saturday versus Alfred, becoming the first player in St. John Fisher's 50-year history to return a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown in the same game. Sizer broke a 14-14 tie after taking the opening kickoff of the second half 88 yards untouched before scrambling 38-yards down the sideline for a punt return score late in the fourth quarter that pulled Fisher to within one score. Overall, Sizer accounted for over 200 total return yards in the game.
 
MEN’S SOCCER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ramazani Juma, Utica, Sr., F, Utica, NY/Proctor
Juma totaled four points on one goal and two assists over two games as the Pioneers won a pair of crucial league contests. Juma scored Utica’s first goal of the game against St. John Fisher on Wednesday which evened the score less than two minutes before halftime. He also connected with teammate Sory Konate in the 84th for the game-winning goal to bring UC back to .500 in the conference. On Saturday, Juma assisted on Byamungu Mugushu’s goal in the 20th minute which would turn out to also be the game-winning goal for Utica in its 1-0 win over the Saxons.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Logan Menna, Nazareth, Fr., GK, Lancaster, NY/Lancaster
Menna made five saves in the 1-0 win over Elmira Saturday to record his fifth shutout of the year. Menna, who leads the Empire 8 in goals against average (0.58), save percentage (.885) and shutouts (5), earned his second E8 weekly honor in 2021.
 
WOMEN’S SOCCER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Emma Osterhoudt, St. John Fisher, Fr., F, Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville
Osterhoudt scored the game-winning goal for the Cardinals in the 86th minute of play in a 2-1 victory at Utica on Wednesday. Osterhoudt, who has now scored three goals this season, tallied her second game winner in as many games and is tied for third-most goals on the squad.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Hannah Fuller, Alfred, Jr., GK, Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks
Fuller recorded a 0.45 goals against average and 0.833 save percentage in a 1-0-1 week versus Empire 8 foes. She made three saves in goal to shutout the Wolves of Keuka College in a 3-0 win on Wednesday. She finished the week by making two saves in a 1-1 tie with Hartwick College on Saturday night.
 
MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Emiliano Terrazas, Alfred, So., Breaststroke/Individual Medley, La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew’s
Terrazas opened up the 2021-22 season with strong finishes at RIT on Saturday. He was one of just a handful of second-place earners for AU as he had two silver finishes on the day in individual events and one with the 200-yard medley relay. He swam a 1:01.34 in the 100-yard breaststroke and then a 2:13.71 in the 200-yard version where he both flat out earned second place in those events. He also recorded a time of 2:02.43 in the 200-yard individual medley in his exhibition win.
 
WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Taylor Robey, Nazareth, Gr., Sprint Freestyle, Hurley, NY/Kingston
Robey opened the 2021-22 season in fine fashion by winning the both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events at Geneseo on Saturday. Robey, a three-time All-American, recorded winning times of 24.65 seconds and 53.88 seconds, respectively in the two freestyle events.
 
WOMEN’S TENNIS
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Aliya Guzman, Nazareth, So., Penfield, NY/Fairport
Guzman was named Most Valuable Player of the 2021 Empire 8 Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament after leading the Golden Flyers to their second straight league title. Guzman won all four of her matches over the weekend at first singles and first doubles. On Friday, Guzman defeated Elise Swanson of Houghton, 6-3, 6-1 and teamed with Claire Pullen for an 8-1 win in doubles, as Nazareth earned a hard-fought 5-4 win over No. 4 seed Houghton in the semifinals. On Saturday, Guzman defeated Jade Killikelly at first singles, 6-4, 6-3 and earned an 8-3 win with Pullen at first doubles as the Golden Flyers knocked off Hartwick, 8-3 in the E8 Championship match. It is Guzman’s third Empire 8 weekly accolade of 2021.
 
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kayley Ericson, Hartwick, Sr., S, Franklin, CT/Norwich Free Academy
Ericson dished out 44 assists, added seven digs and slammed four kills in just four attempts in Wednesday's three-set sweep of Utica. It marked Hartwick’s sixth straight win and fifth straight three-set sweep as the Hawks improved to 14-2 this season.
 
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Alea Steigerwald, St. John Fisher, Sr., OH, Penfield, NY/Penfield
Steigerwald moved into second place on Fisher's all-time kills list (1,327) after helping guide the Cardinals to three wins in four chances last week. She combined to produce 54 kills, 34 digs and seven service aces over 14 sets, averaging 4.46 points per set. On Tuesday, Steigerwald contributed 13 kills and six digs, while hitting .345 in a sweep of Houghton before bouncing back with 19 kills and 16 digs in a hard-fought, five-set match at RIT. Steigerwald went on to add 10 kills and six more digs in a sweep of Plattsburgh on Saturday before posting 12 kills and another six digs in a 3-0 win over Union. It is her third E8 weekly honor of the 2021 season.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Tessa Grover, Nazareth, Fr., S/RS, Penfield, NY/Penfield
Grover helped Nazareth to a 3-1 week after slamming 21 kills to go along with eight service aces, 24 digs, seven blocks and 81 assists, while hitting .313. She had 25 assists and 13 digs in a five-set win over Alfred on Tuesday before hitting .538 with seven kills, 22 assists and a pair of aces in a three-set win over Elmira. Grover added 20 assists, five kills and five digs in a three-set win over Medaille for her fourth E8 weekly honor of 2021.
