UTICA, NY - The Utica College men's soccer team outdueled Elmira College on Saturday afternoon as the Pioneers earned a 1-0 victory over the Soaring Eagles.
The only score of the game came in the 40th minute when Brady Barnard found a wide open Gian Rodriguez downfield with only the keeper to beat. As the keeper came out to defend, Rodriguez put enough air under the shot to clear the reach of Elmira goalie Giovanni Garufi and give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead on his first career goal just before the half.
Elmira attempted eight of its 11 shots in the second period and came close to scoring on headers in the 85th and 8th minutes however, both shots sailed wide and the Utica defense held the Eagles offense in check all afternoon.
By playing in his 68th career game this afternoon, Patrick Hynes entered the top-10 in games played in program history. Cody Baker-Green attempted three of Utica's seven shots as well as two of the team's four shots on goal. Brady Maloney, Daniel Varsames, Hynes and Rodriguez rounded out the seven shot attempts for the Pioneers. In goal, Foti Xidias recorded five saves on 11 shots faced.
UC (4-4-1, 1-1 Empire 8) will be off again until October 9 when the team hosts Nazareth College at noon.
