ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team showed perseverance in their 2-1 overtime victory over Keuka College on Saturday from Yunevich Stadium. With the win, the Saxons (4-10-2, 3-5-0 Empire 8) clinched a berth in the Empire 8 playoffs as the No. 5 seed.
Alfred University totaled 22 shots, eight of which were on goal. Both the Saxons and the Wolves earned nine corner kick opportunities.
Defender Stephen Schill (Southold, NY/Southold) recorded his first goal of the fall campaign. Midfielder Sai Baraka (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) finished with one goal across two shots. Goalkeeper Daniel Koenig (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) picked up three saves.
The Wolves placed early pressure on the Saxons in the opening half, as a deflection off the crossbar allowed for an opening for Keuka to take a 1-0 lead within the 12th minute of action. AU cleaned up defensively, successfully defending five corner kicks and four shots before entering halftime with a 1-0 deficit.
Within the 81st minute of the second half, a free kick from midfielder Andrew Carrillo Macias (Reno, NV) to Schill put the Saxons on the scoreboard. The Saxons defense only surrendered two shots and two corner kicks in the second half before forcing overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Baraka found the back of the net within the 102nd minute to secure the victory for Alfred University.
The Saxons will travel to play St. John Fisher in the first round of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament on Mondday, November 1.
