PITTSFORD, NY – Sophomore Aliya Guzman and freshman Claire Pullen each won twice to lead the Nazareth College Women's Tennis team to a 6-3 victory over St. John Fisher Friday afternoon. The win was the seventh consecutive win for the Golden Flyers and clinched the top seed in the Empire 8 Tournament that begins October 15.
Guzman and Pullen teamed to win an 8-4 decision at No. 1 doubles and Nazareth (7-1 overall, 6-0 E8) went on to sweep the doubles matches for an early 3-0 lead.
Senior Lauren Carr and freshman Lily Bulkeley won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles while junior Theresa Hecht and freshman Gwen Burns posted a close 8-7 (11-9) victory at No. 3 doubles for the Golden Flyers.
Guzman and Pullen opened the singles competition with wins to clinch the overall team victory. Guzman was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles and Pullen posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 as Nazareth took a 5-0 lead.
St. John Fisher (4-4, 3-2) won at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles but sophomore Katelyn Spath took a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles to cap the scoring.
Nazareth will face the winner of the Houghton vs. Alfred match in the first round of the Empire 8 Tournament. St. John Fisher will play Hartwick in the other semifinal match of the tournament October 15 at Houghton. The semifinal winners will play October 16 for the Empire 8 title.
