SUNY Brockport and Utica College will represent the Empire 8 in a pair of ECAC Division III Football Bowl games on Saturday, Nov. 20. SUNY Brockport will host Washington & Jefferson College in the Clayton Chapman Bowl at 1 p.m., while Utica will travel to Grove City College in the Scotty Whitelaw Bowl, which is set to take place at 12 p.m.
Brockport enters the Clayton Chapman Bowl with a 7-3 overall record. The Golden Eagles defense ranks second nationally in passes intercepted with 25 and third nationally with five defensive touchdowns. Their rushing defense ranks fourth nationally, allowing an average of just 45.6 yards per contest. Brockport also ranks third nationally in total defense, allowing an average of 194.6 yards per contest.
Junior running back
Jala Coad rolled up 120 yards and two touchdowns on the ground as SUNY Brockport cruised to a 38-0 victory over Alfred in the regular season finale at home on Saturday. Coad finished the regular season leading the league with 1,198 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns, and scoring (10.2 points per game). He scored 43 more points and rushed for 328 more yards than any other player in the Empire 8 this season.
Senior safety
Alaan Montgomery was recently named the Empire 8 Player of the Week and he leads the nation with an average of .9 interceptions per game. He also ranks sixth nationally and leads the league with 1.6 passes defended per contest. He has eight interceptions in his last seven games played. Saturday was his second two-INT performance of the season.
Utica (6-4) will play at Grove City College's Robert E. Thorn Field. The Pioneers are making their fourth ECAC Bowl Game appearance in program-history, and their first since 2018 when they defeated Ithaca College 44-42 to claim the Scotty Whitelaw Bowl crown. Grove City of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference enters with a 7-3 overall mark.
Utica is fresh off a 35-14 win over St. John Fisher this past Saturday. For the first time this season, Utica had two 100-yard rushers in one game. Newcomer
James Salles (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) led the way with a season and career high 159 net rushing yards to go with a rushing touchdown. Graduate student
Tim Hogan (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) rushed for 112 yards on just 13 carries and produced three rushing touchdowns. On defense, graduate linebacker
Kwasi Addo (Menands, NY/Shaker) had 13 tackles and a forced fumble.
The eight teams selected by the ECAC Division III Football Committee to participate are SUNY Brockport (7-3), Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham (6-4), Grove City College (7-3), Hobart College (8-2), Saint Vincent College (5-5), Utica College (6-4), Washington and Jefferson College (8-2) and Westminster College (PA) (8-2)..
