CAZENOVIA, NY - Behind Sydney Przygoda's 20-point, 20-rebound double-double, the Utica College women's basketball team won its fifth straight game to start the season, 86-56 at Cazenovia College on Tuesday.
The Pioneers never trailed in the game as the wire-to-wire win started with a 7-0 run that eventually turned into a 27-10 Utica lead by the end of the first quarter. UC maintained control throughout the second quarter thanks to nine points out of Cora Sawyer to take Utica into halftime ahead 50-24.
Cazenovia found some more offensive rhythm in the second half, scoring 18 points in the third quarter on 52.9 percent shooting and finishing the fourth quarter even at 14 with the Pioneers. Despite the halftime adjustments made by the Wildcats, UC still found itself in the driver's seat throughout the final 20 minutes for the team's second road win of the season in as many tries.
The Pioneers scored 36 points off of a season high 22 steals which also helped the team create 21 fast break points. Much like the team has done to its previous four opponents, Utica out-rebounded Cazenovia 53-38, 27 of which were offensive boards that helped lead to 17 second chance points. Przygoda grabbed 13 of the Pioneers' offensive rebounds as well.
While Przygoda stood out, Sawyer also had a fantastic night with a team high 27 points on 9-for-12 shooting as well as eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Krissy Geraci recorded 13 points and seven rebounds, Petrina DeMarco totaled 10 points and five steals, and Brigid Johndrow had team highs with nine assists and seven steals.
UC (5-0, 0-0 Empire 8) will have a week off before hosting crosstown rival SUNY Poly at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30.
