Nazareth's women's swimming and diving team defeated visiting Rochester 174-126 in its first meet of the 2021 season on Friday evening. The Golden Flyers won 11 of 16 events, including three individual victories by senior Taylor Robey. Friday's victory marked the first time Nazareth defeated the Yellowjackets since the 2009-10 season.
The Golden Flyers' divers performed well with three divers recording NCAA qualifying scores. Junior Allie Norwood took first in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with both of her scores reaching the NCAA qualifier. In the 1-meter event, Norwood, senior Taylor Woltz, and freshman Elizabeth Tripp each reached NCAA qualifying scores. Norwood was first with a score of 272.42, followed by Woltz in second with a score of 262.18, and freshman Lizzy Tripp in fourth with a score of 255.44. Norwood recorded a score of 277.50 in the 3-meter event, and Tripp was third with a score of 250.49.
Robey's time in the 50-meter freestyle of :26.42 broke her own school record of :26.86 from October 13th, 2018. She placed first in the 200-meter freestyle (2:13.05) and 100-meter freestyle (:59.56) as well. Junior Paige Pasquarella captured third place finishes in the 50-meter and (:28.72) and 100-meter freestyle events (1:03.70), while freshman Julie Filipski was third in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:18.50. Filipski added a second place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:52.88) and a third place finish in the 200-meter IM (2:38.34). Freshman Ashleigh Parsons followed Filipski in the breaststroke (2:58.82) for third place in the event.
In the 200-meter butterfly, Nazareth's tandem of senior Kaela Santos and freshman Grace Cioffi finished first and second with times of 2:36.32 and 2:37.25, respectively. In the 100-meter butterfly freshman Abigail Santos took first with a time of 1:07.94, while Kaela Santos was third with a time of 1:10.70. Abbie Santos recorded a second win of the meet in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:17.02. Freshman Sydney Federico added a victory in the 800-meter with a time of 10:12.34.
In the 400-meter freestyle, junior Caroline Martin (4:56.46), Federico (4:58.68), and junior Amanda Foster (4:58.80) finished second, third, and fourth. Senior Kathryn Batz and sophomore Alyzah Ziga added third place finishes. Batz was third in the 100-meter backstroke (1:11.44), and Ziga was third in the 200-meter backstroke (2:37.36).
In addition to the Golden Flyers' success in the individual events, Nazareth won the 200-meter medley relay and 200-meter freestyle relay. In the medley relay, Batz, freshman Ashleigh Parsons, and the Santos sisters finished with a time of 2:07.02 to edge the UR relay by less than one second. In the freestyle relay, Robey, Batz, Abbie Santos, and Pasquarella totaled a time of 1:52.02.
Nazareth's men's swimming and diving team is in action on Saturday when the Golden Flyers host the Yellowjackets. Nazareth's women's team is in action again next Friday when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
