HOUGHTON, NY— Ryan Newtown turned in another outstanding performance on the mound, and the Houghton Highlanders capitalized on some timely hitting as they defeated the Alfred State Pioneers on Friday afternoon, 8-1.
In his second outing of the year, Newtown tossed a nine-inning complete game, allowing one walk and eight hits, while striking out five.
Houghton opened the scoring with a four-spot in the first inning, thanks to a Zach Parr RBI single, a two-RBI double from Davis McMillan, and an RBI groundout from Tony Bertolino.
The Pioneers picked up a run in the second off a Nick Serce double, but could muster nothing further off Newtown.
Houghton tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, then three more in the eighth.

COACH'S CORNER:
"This was a good win for us. Ryan [Newtown] gave us a tremendous, and much-needed, performance on the mound. He attacked the zone, kept hitters off balance, and ate up innings. We were a little short-handed today, so helped a lot.
"We played a lot of young guys, who approached the game with confidence and courage, and it showed. We played quality defense, gave Ryan a comfortable lead early, and tacked on runs to separate. Overall, I was incredibly pleased with what we displayed today.
"I'm looking forward to a good test tomorrow against RIT." – Coach
Brian Reitnour
