2021 Empire 8 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship to Take Place March 20 at Nazareth

Alfred University, Houghton College, Nazareth College, Russell Sage College, St. John Fisher and Utica College will compete at the 2021 Empire 8 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships starting at 11:30 am on Saturday, March 20 from the Golisano Training Center on the campus of Nazareth. St. John Fisher will look to repeat as Empire 8 Champions.

2021 Empire 8 Team Capsules (Order Based on 2020 Championship Finish)
 
Defending champion St. John Fisher is looking for its fourth Empire 8 crown in 2021, having also won in 2014-15, 2017-18 and 2019-20. The Cardinals enter the meet with the current top performer in 10 of 16 events. Senior Kyle Rollins returns as the two-time defending Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. Rollins is the national leader in the high jump (2.10 meters) and is 14th nationally in the triple jump (14.07 meters). He is the three-time defending league champion in the high jump, has two straight long jump titles and is looking to repeat as triple jump champion. In addition, Rollins is the top-seed in the 60-meter hurdles. Jonah Dean and Matthew Pennell will look to score big points in the sprint events. Dean is the top seed in both the 200- and 400-meters. Grant Stokoe is a standout in the 800-, 1,500- and 3,000-meter events, while Ethan Billings is the top-seed in the 5,000-meters. Phoenix Palmer and Jordan Kostera are among the E8 leaders in the pole vault, while Matthew Stasiw and Zachary Briggs will contend in the jumps. Ryan Desautels, Chase Corcoran and William Corwin give the Cardinals a strong trio in the throws. Desautels is the defending E8 champion in the shot put, while Corcoran is the defending champion in the weight throw.
 
Utica will be a strong contender to earn the E8 crown in 2021. First-year sprinter Daijon Richards, the E8 Track Athlete of the Week on March 1, is the top-seed in the 60-meter dash and third seed in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Zuriel Wright, the 2019-20 E8 Indoor Track Rookie of the Year is a top contender in the 60-meter dash, high jump and long jump. Justin Garrett and Hunter Reed will look to score points in the middle distance events. Utica has several strong contenders in the long and triple jump events, including Matthew Breault and Sei Sei. Justin Valentin and Andrew Wieder will look to score points in the high jump. Throwers Antwan Kelly, Jacob Barnes, Justin Swavely, Brady VanAernam and Arthur Bittel are among the current E8 leaders in both events.
 
Nazareth is looking for its first Empire 8 indoor track and field title. Connor McCauslin is Nazareth’s top sprinter, along with Kaleb Luton and Mike Welch. Josh Tomaka, Chris Celecki, Jake Suddaby and Nate McNally will be in the mix to score valuable points in the middle distance events. Nathan Bowers, the 2019 E8 Cross Country Rookie of the Year, will also be a top contender in 3,000- and 5,000-meters, along with Ethan Glashauser. Luton, the reigning E8 Track Athlete of the Week, is a multi-event standout in both the 60-meter hurdles and long and triple jump events. Junior Josh Pomerleau enters the championship as the top-seed in the pole vault, while sophomore Chris Perez is Nazareth’s top contender in both throwing events.
 
Houghton will look for a top-three team finish. Sprinter Nate Zedomi is seeded second in both the 200- and 400-meter dash, while Jerome Houston, Micah Williams, Malachi Yeager and Brennan Lewandowski can provide a spark for the Highlanders. Lewandowski is also a standout high jumper. Adam McCutcheon is a strong middle-distance competitor as well.  The Highlanders have a bevy of distance runners who will look to score key points, including Dave Russo, Dillon Bell and Dylan Beckhorn. Houghton’s 4 x 400-meter relay enters the championship as the top-seed. Yeager is also a contender in the high jump and long jump. Caleb Pettit will also look to score points for Houghton in the throws.
 
Alfred enters the 2021 Empire 8 Championship looking to improve off of last season’s fifth place finish. Cody Collins, John Wendt and George Mecca will look to excel in the sprints and hurdles events, while Chris Mayo, Tim Mayo, Kyle Jenkins and Grant Baldwin can contribute in the middle-distance races. Nate Marrero will vie for points in the jumps.
 
Sage is making its Empire 8 Indoor Championship debut this weekend. The Gators are off to a strong start in their first indoor season, as first-year standout Dominic Nova enters the championship as the top-seed in the 800-meters and third seed in the mile run. He was the Empire 8 Male Athlete of the Week on March 8. Aronold Burnett will look to score in the sprint events, while Holden Maynard will compete in distance events. Noah Vice, Deshawn Fleary and Carlos Temple will represent the Gators in the jumps.
