The Empire 8 Conference announced its 2021 Women’s Indoor Track and Field All-Conference awards on Wednesday, March 24. The awards were voted on by the league's head coaches at the league championship meet, held at Nazareth College on March 19.
Nazareth junior Brenna Johnson was named the 2021 Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet after scoring 40 points during the championship for the Golden Flyers. She won three individual events (60-meters, 200-meters and 400-meters) and was part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team on March 19. She won the 60-meters in 8.06 seconds, 200-meters in 27.35 seconds and 400-meters in 1:01.56 in leading Nazareth to runner-up honors.
Senior standout Jordan Lehman of St. John Fisher was named the 2021 Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet. Lehman garnered Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Championship Field Athlete of the Meet accolades after finishing second in both the weight throw (14.58 meters) and shot put (11.54 meters) on March 19. She gained 16 key points for the Cardinals, who won their second consecutive team title by two points over Nazareth.
Hannah Ragule of Nazareth earned 2021 E8 Rookie of the Meet honors. A versatile performer, Ragule earned 20 points during the championship for the Golden Flyers and won the triple jump with a leap of 10.65 meters. She also placed third in the long jump (4.93 meters), fifth in the high jump (1.42 meters) and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (10.70 seconds).
Nazareth head coach James Goss and his staff, along with the St. John Fisher coaching staff, led by head coach Mike Henchen shared 2021 Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year. Honors. Nazareth enjoyed its best showing in program history, while the Cardinals won their second consecutive indoor Empire 8 Championship. The two teams battled to the final event, with St. John Fisher pulling out a narrow 160-158 win.
One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2021 Women's Indoor Track & Field Sportswoman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen.
To be named an E8 All-Conference selection, a student athlete must have finished in the top two of an event at the Conference's Championship Meet. Winners of the event are named to the First Team, while the Second Team is comprised of the runner-up from each event.
