Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on March 30, 2021 for games played from March 22-March 28. It is the seventh Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2020-21 season.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Nathan Bowers, Nazareth, So., Endicott, NY/Owego
Bowers opened the cross country season by winning the 6,000-meter event at the Terry Rodenbeck-St. John Fisher Invitational by just over seven seconds in a time of 19:47.4.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Riley Corey, St. John Fisher, So., Waterloo, NY/Waterloo
Corey picked right back up where she left the indoor track season by claiming a runaway victory in the women's 4,000-meter race at the Rodenbeck-Fisher Invite on Friday. Corey finished the race in just 15:44.0, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up, setting a new personal best time in the event.
FIELD HOCKEY
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Bre Socker, St. John Fisher, Sr., F, Liverpool, NY/Liverpool
Socker led the Cardinals to an 11-0 win over Utica on Thursday, establishing a new program record for most goals scored in a game. The All-American accounted for four goals and two assists on seven shots, scoring a whopping 10 points on the day.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Amanda Chuttey, Nazareth, Jr., GK, Auburn, NY/Port Byron
Chuttey made 12 saves in a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Utica on Sunday to start the season. Five of her stops came in the overtime period.
MEN’S SOCCER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ben Woolingham, St. John Fisher, So., F, East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East
Woolingham scored Fisher's two goals, including the overtime game winner, to push the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over Houghton Thursday. Woolingham interrupted a Houghton clear in the game's first half and drove straight to the net for the goal. In the overtime period, he was at the end of a crossed ball, which he headed opposite of the keeper. It was Woolingham’s first multiple-goal effort at the collegiate level.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Tarik Abdi, Elmira, Fr., D, Houston, TX/IMG Academy
Abdi made his collegiate debut in Elmira's 1-0 victory over Utica College on Monday and made an immediate impact, heading in the game-winning goal off a corner kick. He helped the defense lock down the shutout win.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kierra Caissey, Utica, Sr., F, Gardner, MA/Gardner
Caissey led the way for the Pioneers by scoring two goals in a 6-0 win over Elmira on Sunday. She scored her first goal in the fifth minute and second the 42nd minute, to guide Utica to a comfortable win.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Gabrielle Pighetti, Nazareth, Jr., GK, Howard, PA/Bellefonte
Pighetti helped lead Nazareth to two more shutout wins, 4-0 at Houghton and 3-0 win versus Russell Sage. Pighetti has allowed just one goal this season in five games. She was credited with three saves in the two victories.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Sidney Taylor, Nazareth, Sr., Diving, Rochester, NY/Pittsford Mendon
Taylor won both the 1- and 3-meter events at the season ending Rochester Invitational over the weekend. He recorded a score of 318.65 on 3-meter board and tallied 297.97 in the 1-meter for the Golden Flyers. It is Taylor’s third E8 weekly honor of 2021.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Allie Norwood, Nazareth, Jr., Diving, Lockport, NY/Lockport
Norwood won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the season ending Rochester Invitational in leading Nazareth to the team title. She recorded a score of 280.80 to win the 3-meter event and tallied 254.65 points for the win on the 1-meter board.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – McKenzie Hart, Nazareth, Jr., L/OH, Apalachin, NY/Owego
Hart led Nazareth to a four-set win over Alfred on Wednesday, recording 23 digs to go along with 15 kills. She also added three aces and one assisted block for an 18.5-point night.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Jamie Chun, Alfred, Fr., L/DS, Hilo, HI/Hilo
Chun was a defensive workhorse as she recorded double-digit digs in all three of her matches last week. She established her collegiate career-high of 23 digs against Nazareth College. On Sunday, Chun had 12 digs in the first match against St. John Fisher and another 19 in the non-conference match with the Cardinals. Chun also added seven service aces in the three matches.
