No. 3 Utica and No. 4 Houghton Advance in Empire 8 Women's Tennis Tournament

Utica and Houghton women's tennis programs both earn first E8 postseason victories

The 2021 Empire 8 Spring Women's Tennis Tournament opened up on Tuesday afternoon with the two higher seeds advancing. No. 3 seed Utica won its first ever E8 Tournament contest, 8-1 over No. 6 seed Hartwick, while No. 4 seed Houghton also won its first E8 postseason contest, winning by default over No. 5 seed Russell Sage.

After dropping the match at first doubles, Utica dominated after winning the final two doubles contests before allowing just three points to sweep the singles matches.

The Pioneers will travel to No. 2 seed St. John Fisher and face the Cardinals at Mendon Tennis Center in semifinal action on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Utica and St. John Fisher waged a tremendous battle on March 13, with the Cardinals pulling out a 5-4 win.

Houghton will take on top-seed Nazareth College at the Golisano Training Center in a semifinal contest at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Nazareth and Houghton faced off in the season-opener on March 6, with Nazareth earning a 9-0 victory.

Thursday's winners will meet for the 2021 Spring Women's Tennis Championship at the highest remaining seed. The E8 Champion receives an automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship.
