The Empire 8 is well represented as the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced their major academic awards in March. Student-athletes were eligible for NFHCA National Academic Squad, NHFCA Scholars of Distinction and teams were eligible for the National Academic Team award.
A whopping 106 Empire 8 student-athletes from its nine member institutions were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Academic Squad. In addition, 15 seniors earned Academic Squad honors for the fourth consecutive season.
Overall, 2,050 student-athletes from 140 Division III institutions earned recognition on the 2020 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad. The Division III National Academic Squad program honors student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. Both 2019 Empire 8 Champion Hartwick College and 2019 runner-up Nazareth College led the way with 16 honorees apiece. Elmira College and St. John Fisher were right behind with 14 each.
The Empire 8 had 25 student-athletes named NHFCA Scholars of Distinction. The Scholars of Distinction program recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the 2020-21 academic year. Overall, 450 Division III student-athletes earned that prestigious honor. The complete list of Empire 8 recipients is below.
The NFHCA also announced that 147 different Division III institutions earned the 2020 NFHCA National Academic Team award, which recognizes programs that earned a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of the 2020-2021 school year. All nine Empire 8 institutions earned the NFHCA National Academic Team award.
