Balanced attack lifts Nazareth to first victory, spoiling Keuka's Empire 8 debut

Host Nazareth used an 18-6 second-quarter scoring spree to pull away from Keuka in an Empire 8 women's basketball game Friday. Four players scored in double figures for the Golden Flyers, who dominated the action for a 76-40 victory.

The win was the first of the season for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 1-1 both overall and in conference play. Keuka, playing its first-ever Empire 8 Conference game, dropped to 0-1.

Junior Jadyn Abrams led all scorers with 16 points, including a pair of three-point shots. She also had eight rebounds, three assists and four steals. Junior Kim Davis, making just her second career start, posted a double-double with career highs in points (15) and rebounds (15). Junior Caley Cornwell added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals and sophomore Ryann Stefaniak had 10 points, five assists and three steals.

Nazareth led 19-13 after one quarter and opened the second quarter with a 16-2 scoring run that ended with the Golden Flyers firmly in control, 35-15, with less than two minutes to play in the half. Davis and Stefaniak each had eight points in the first half and Abrams added seven to fuel the offense.

The Golden Flyers were never seriously challenged in the second half and the lead continued to grow in the fourth quarter. Davis sank a three-pointer with eight minutes to go to extend the lead to 25 points, 59-34, then Sarah Simmons sank a long-distance shot about a minute later as the lead ballooned to 30 points, 64-34. Cornell went 5-for-5 from the floor in the second half to score all 10 of her points. Freshman Chelsea Woodsum also contriguted with four points in each half in her second college game. The last few minutes of the game featured two baskets for freshman Emma Garvey, who saw her college action.

Nazareth went 33-for-77 from the field (42.9%) and grabbed 49 rebounds, including 21 offensive. Keuka sank just 15 of 53 shots (28.3%) for the game and committed 24 turnovers. Nazareth had 20 steals.

Nazareth is on the road Saturday for a non-conference game at Medaille at 2 p.m.
