At long last, Nazareth opened its women's tennis season Saturday with a pair of Empire 8 Conference matches at Houghton's Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse.
The Golden Flyers had little difficulty in a 9-0 triumph over Houghton, but then had a tougher time against Utica before settling for a 6-3 victory.
Freshman Aliya Guzman, junior Caroline Keegan and sophomore Rachel Cook each won two singles matches. Guzman also teamed with Graduate student Brooke Murphy to take a pair of victories at first doubles.
Murphy and senior Marissa Towers each recorded singles wins against Houghton and the second doubles tandem of Keegan and Hannah Chesner also recorded a team point with an 8-4 win.
Against Utica, sophomore Theresa Hecht joined Guzman, Keegan and Cook and singles winners. Guzman and Murphy teamed up for a close result at first doubles, winning 8-6, while the team of Hecht and Towers won 8-4 at third doubles.
Nazareth is home next Saturday for E8 matches against Sage and Hartwick.
