Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on March 8, 2021 for games played from March 1-March 7. It is the second Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2020-21 season.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jalon Borders, Sage, Jr., G, Bartow, FL/Bartow
Borders helped the Gators to a 72-69 win on opening night over Hartwick. He scored a game-high 24 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block. Borders was clutch from the foul line, shooting 10-11 from the line.
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brendan Trapper, St. John Fisher, Jr., F, Buffalo, NY/Canisius
Trapper displayed his talents on the offensive end of the floor last week after helping lead Fisher to wins over Houghton and Elmira. Trapper averaged 24 points on 20-of-33 (.606) shooting from the field. The forward also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks on the week. Against Houghton, Trapper set a new career-high with 24 points on 11 field goals before matching that high on Friday with 24 points in a road win at Elmira.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Brijon Warren, Houghton, Fr., G, Phoenix, AZ/Imagine Prep
Warren averaged 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game in his first two collegiate games for the Highlanders. Warren had eight points, four assists and four steals in the season-opener against St. John Fisher. He followed that up with 13 points and six boards at Alfred.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Emie Taylor, Houghton, Jr., C, Ghana, Africa/New Life Christian
Taylor opened her season with a pair of double doubles in two Houghton wins. She scored 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor to go along with 10 boards and three blocks in a win over Elmira. Taylor followed that up with 21 points, a career-best 20 rebounds and four blocks in a victory at Alfred.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Chelsea Woodsum, Nazareth, Fr., F, Weare, NH/John Stark Regional
Woodsum was impressive in her first collegiate action, averaging 7.7 points, while shooting 52.6 percent from the floor in three games. Woodsum scored a season-best 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting against Medaille Saturday.
MEN’S LACROSSE
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ian Evans, St. John Fisher, Jr., A, Lafayette, NY/Lafayette
Evans was a force on the offensive end of the field for the No. 14 Cardinals as the junior helped lead St. John Fisher College past Clarkson University, 18-11 in a non-conference road pairing. Evans finished the game with six goals and two assists and led all players with eight shots. Six of his eight points came in the first half, as Fisher built an insurmountable 12-2 lead.
GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Darin Eakins, St. John Fisher, Gr., GK, Hamburg, Germany/International School of Hamburg
Eakins picked up his first win of the season on Sunday as the No. 14 Cardinals ran past Clarkson University, 18-11. Eakins played nearly 53 minutes in goal and made 11 saves in all. The graduate student allowed just seven goals and finished the game with two ground balls.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Sidney Taylor, Nazareth, Sr., Diver, Rochester, NY/Pittsford Mendon
Taylor continued to dominate the diving events as he won both the 1- and 3- meter events in the dual meet win at Clarkson Saturday. He scored a 242.75 to win the 1-meter event and a 248.25 to win the 3-meter event and earn his second straight Empire 8 weekly honor.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Paige Pasquarella, Nazareth, Jr., Freestyle/Butterfly, Hamburg, NY/Frontier
Pasquarella won the 200-meter freestyle race with a winning time of 2:18.99, she was second in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:10.92 and she swam the anchor leg of the winning 4x400 free relay. The relay time was 4:11.79. Her leg of 1:03.20 was second fastest (second to Taylor Robey) in the race as Nazareth rolled to a dual meet win over Clarkson.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Aliyah Guzman, Nazareth, Fr., Penfield, NY/Fairport
Guzman won all four matches on the weekend in her first collegiate action. At No. 1 singles, she rolled to an 8-1 win against Houghton and 8-0 victory against Utica. She teamed with Brooke Murphy to win at No. 1 doubles by scores of 8-6 and 8-2, respectively, as Nazareth won both of its league matches to open the season.
MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Dominic Nova, Sage, Fr., Distance, Rensselaer, NY/Columbia
In the program's first ever indoor meet, Nova was the anchor and part of the winning distance medley relay team at the Nazareth Invitational Saturday, posting a time of 11:34.44. He also added a third-place finish in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:56.57.
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kyle Rollins, St. John Fisher, Sr., Jumps, Groveland, NY/Geneseo
Rollins looked in mid-season shape as the Groveland native won the high jump, triple jump and long jump on Saturday at the Nazareth Invitational. In his first competition since Indoor 2020, Rollins took first place in the long jump with a top-25 mark of 6.79 meters and first place in the triple jump with a jump of 14.07 meters - good for 12th in the Nation. Rollins then capped off a terrific day with an impressive high jump of 2.10 meters to sit atop the Division III leaderboard.
WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Amanda Burrichter, Houghton, So., Distance, Fillmore, NY/Fillmore Central
Burrichter won the 3,000-meter run at the Nazareth Invitational by 27 seconds with a time of 10:57.94. That is the top mark in the Empire 8 this year.
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Lea Richard, Nazareth, Fr., Throws, Gansevoort, NY/Glens Falls
Richard set the school record in the weight throw (14.75 meters) to place third and was fifth in the shot put (10.55 meters) at the Nazareth Invitational on Saturday for her second straight weekly accolade.
