Top-seeded Nazareth College and No. 2 seed St. John Fisher College emerged victorious in 2021 Empire 8 Spring Women's Tennis Champiionship Tournament Semifinal action Thursday. Nazareth rolled to an 8-1 win over No. 4 seed Houghton College, while St. John Fisher defeated No. 3 seed Utica, 5-4. Nazareth will host St. John Fisher in the Empire 8 Championship match on Saturday, April 3 from the Golisano Training Center.
In the opening semifinal, Nazareth held a 2-1 lead after doubles play before sweeping the singles portion for the victory. Aliya Guzman and Brooke Murphy were victorious at both singles and doubles for the Golden Flyers.
St. John Fisher led Utica 2-1 after the doubles flight before Utica's top three singles standouts, Ellen Collie, Ellen Lyga and Morgan Willis all won in straight sets to give the Pioneers a 4-2 lead. The Cardinals would rally, as Amanda Thongsirimonhoun, Veronika Jurczuk and Jackie Chouinard picked up wins at sixth, fourth and fifth singles, respectively, to win the match and advance.
Nazareth and St. John Fisher met less than a week ago on March 27, with the Golden Flyers pulling out a 7-2 win.
This will mark the second straight meeting between St. John Fisher and Nazareth in the Empire 8 Championship. The Cardinals won 5-0 in 2019. The league champion receives an automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship, which takes place May 24-30 at the Bizantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, CA.
