Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on April 13, 2021 for games played from April 5-April 11. It is the 11th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2020-21 season.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Grant Stokoe, St. John Fisher, Jr., Cortland, NY/Homer
Stokoe used a late kick to win the individual title at the 2021 Empire 8 Spring Cross Country Championships at Houghton on Friday. Stokoe won the 6,000-meter event by just over two seconds in a time of 19:08.3 and was named the E8 Runner of the Meet.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Riley Corey, St. John Fisher, So., Waterloo, NY/Waterloo
Corey was the individual winner at the 2021 Empire 8 Spring Cross Country Championships, helping lead St. John Fisher to the team title. Corey won the race by a whopping 34 seconds, completing the 5,000-meter event in a time of 18:43.1 and was named E8 Runner of the Meet.
FIELD HOCKEY
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sydney Gagnon, Hartwick, So., F, Chestertown, NY/North Warren Central
Gagnon led the Hawks with two goals, four points and 16 shots in a pair of victories for Hartwick this week. She recorded a team-high nine shots and tied the game at 1-1 just over 40 minutes into the game in a 2-1 victory over Utica on Thursday. She added another seven shots while registering the game-winning goal at the 13:44 mark Sunday in a 3-0 triumph over Nazareth which clinched at least the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Tournament.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Allyson Osborne, Hartwick, Sr., GK, Nottingham, PA/Solanco
Osborne played all 120 minutes and surrendered only one goal in the Hartwick cage in a pair of victories over Utica and Nazareth this week. After making one save in a 2-1 win over Utica on Thursday, Osborne stopped five and earned a shutout in a 3-0 victory Sunday over Nazareth which clinched a home playoff game for the Empire 8 Tournament. It is Osborne’s second straight weekly accolade.
MEN’S SOCCER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Logan Schrock, Houghton, So., M, Dalton, OH/Central Christian
Schrock scored a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner to lead the Highlanders to a 3-0 win over Nazareth College on Thursday.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Caleb Loew, Houghton, Sr., GK, Center Valley, PA/Faith Christian Academy
Loew posted a pair of shutouts in conference wins over Nazareth and Russell Sage, which clinched a share of the E8 regular season title. Loew made seven saves in a 3-0 win over Nazareth Thursday and also stopped seven shots in a 1-0 overtime win over Russell Sage Sunday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kealy DeForest, Houghton, Sr., M, Adams, NY/South Jefferson
DeForest scored four goals in a pair of Houghton wins last week. Versus Alfred on Thursday, DeForest's two second half goals led the Highlanders to a 3-1 victory. On Saturday against Sage, DeForest tied the game at 1-1 before firing in what would become the game winning goal in the second half.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Gabrielle Pighetti, Nazareth, Jr., GK, Howard, PA/Bellefonte
Pighetti made four saves to finish the regular season with two more shutout wins, as Nazareth blanked RIT and Alfred. She has allowed just three goals in eight games and has five shutouts.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sarah Raeman, Alfred, Sr., OPP/OH, Canandaigua, NY/Canadaigua
Raeman had back-to-back matches with double-digits kills and points as she had a season-high 13 kills and season-high two aces for a season-high 15.0 points in the Saxons’ first three-set win over Elmira College in school history and first single match sweep since 1993. Raeman then had 10 kills and one block assist for 10.5 points in a five-set, non-conference loss to Elmira.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Maddie Hampton, Elmira, Fr., L/DS, Horseheads, NY/Horseheads
Hampton helped Elmira win two of three matches with victories over Utica and Alfred. She logged 27 digs with a team-high average of 3.38 digs per set. In addition, Hampton also led the team with seven aces. Hampton helped the Soaring Eagles cruise past Utica with 12 digs and season-highs in aces (6) and assists (3). She added nine digs with one ace in the first match against the Saxons and finished with six digs in the second match.
