The St. John Fisher College duo of junior Grant Stokoe and freshman Ethan Billings earned individual accolades, as the Empire 8 Conference announced its 2021 Spring Men’s Cross Country All-Conference awards on Friday, April 16. The individual awards are voted on by the league's head coaches.
Stokoe used a late kick to win the individual title at the 2021 Empire 8 Spring Cross Country Championships at Houghton College’s Field of Dreams Park on April 9. Stokoe won the 6,000-meter event by just over two seconds in a time of 19:08.3 and was named the E8 Runner of the Meet.
Billings was the top first-year finisher, placing third overall at the Empire 8 Championships with a time of 19:21.8 over the 6,000-meter course, helping lead the Cardinals to a runner-up finish in the team scoring. He was named the 2021 Empire Spring Men’s Cross Country Championship Rookie of the Meet.
The Nazareth coaching staff, led by head coach James Goss was honored as the 2021 Empire 8 Spring Coaching Staff of the Year. Goss and Associate Head Coach Mike Heyman led Nazareth to its first Empire 8 Championship in program history. In addition, nine Golden Flyers earned 2021 Spring All-Conference honors, including first team selections Nathan Bowers, Mike Brown, Nathan McNally, Matt Reimann and Josh Tomaka.
The Empire 8 first and second team selections were determined at the championship meet on April 9 at Houghton. The top-10 finishers earned first team honors, while finishers 11-20 garnered second team accolades. Houghton junior Dave Russo, Nazareth’s Nathan McNally and Stokoe all earned their second first team honor.
One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2021 Spring Men's Cross Country Sportsman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen.
