Nazareth Wins First Empire 8 Men's Cross Country Championship in Program History

Golden Flyers have four of the top seven finishers to take the team title

HOUGHTON, NY – Nazareth College won its first men's cross country title in program history, as the Golden Flyers earned victory at the 2021 Empire 8 Spring Men’s Cross Country Championship at sun-soaked Houghton College's Field of Dreams Course on Friday, April 9. St. John Fisher junior Grant Stokoe also won the individual title, recording a time of 19:08.3 over the 6,000-meter course.
 
The Golden Flyers had four of the top seven finishers to win the team title with a score of 28 points, St. John Fisher finished second with 43 points, while host Houghton placed third with 55 points. Alfred University finished fourth, while defending champion Utica College placed fifth with 143 points.
 
Stokoe, who just three weeks ago was named the 2021 Empire 8 Indoor Athlete of the Championship Meet, outlasted runner-up Nate Bowers of Nazareth College by just over two seconds. The duo raced as a team on the lead for the final 4,000-meters. St. John Fisher freshman Ethan Billings was third in a time of 19:21.8 to earn E8 Rookie of the Meet honors. Billings finished just ahead of Nazareth freshman Matt Reimann and sophomore Nate McNally, who rounded out the top five.
 
Houghton's Dave Russo and Dylan Bell, along with Nazareth's Mike Brown and Josh Tomaka and St. John Fisher's Bogdan Rozvora rounded out the top-10. All 10 runners earn All-Empire 8 first team honors.
