After earning a spot in the Division III NCAA Tournament by winning the Empire 8 Conference championship, the Nazareth College Women's Tennis team dropped a 6-0 decision to Endicott College Friday morning to end the season for the Golden Flyers.
Endicott (10-0) advances to face Tufts Saturday in second round action.
Nazareth (9-1) fell in all three doubles matches as Endicott posted wins of 8-1 at No. 1 and 8-2 at both No. 2 and No. 3 to take the early 3-0 lead in the match.
The Gulls then posted straight sets wins at No. 6, No. 5 and No. 3 singles to end the match. Normally, the match is called as soon as one team reaches a fifth victory but since both the No. 3 and No. 5 singles matches ended at virtually the same time, both scores were counted in the final tally.
Freshman Aliya Guzman, who earned the Empire 8 Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards, was leading 4-3 at No. 1 singles for Nazareth when the match was called. Guzman paired with sophomore Theresa Hecht at No. 1 doubles and Hecht played the No. 3 singles position for Nazareth.
No. 2 doubles featured juniors Hannah Chesner and Caroline Keegan. Keegan was No. 2 singles and Chesner competed at the No. 5 position. The final doubles pair for Nazareth was senior Elizabeth Delaney and freshman Katelyn Spath. Freshman Dorie Karandy played in the No. 6 singles position and Spath represented Nazareth at No. 4 singles.
The Golden Flyers earned the NCAA automatic berth after winning the 2021 Empire 8 Championship on April 3.
