Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on May 17, 2021 for games played from May 10-May 16. It is the 16th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2020-21 season.
BASEBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Luke Duffy, St. John Fisher, Jr., OF, Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley
Duffy batted .800 last week as the Cardinals swept Keuka College on Friday to advance in the Empire 8 Championship. The junior outfielder was 8-for-10 at the dish with a double, a triple, one home run, four RBI and four runs scored overall. In the series opener, Duffy went 3-for-4 with a walk before going 5-for-6 in the nightcap. He fell a double short of the cycle and led Fisher with four RBI and four runs.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Anthony Brophy, St. John Fisher, Gr., P, North Tonawanda, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate
Brophy moved to 7-0 on the year after winning the opening game of the Empire 8 Championship on Friday as the top-seeded Cardinals completed the sweep of the Keuka College Wolves. Brophy pitched eight strong innings and allowed just one run on four hits. The lefty finished with 12 strikeouts and did not yield a walk. It is Brophy’s second E8 weekly honor of 2021.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Jason Story, Utica, Fr., OF, Hilton, NY/Hilton
Story drove in five runs to help Utica advance in the Empire 8 Semifinal series at Houghton. On Friday, Story homered and drove in a pair of runs in game one versus Houghton. He scored once drove in a pair of runs in the game two victory that set up the winner-take-all game three on Saturday. Story would come up big once again with a run scored and RBI in Utica’s 8-7 win.
SOFTBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jessica Wilcox, Alfred, Gr., P, Forestville, NY/Pine Valley
Wilcox was named the 2021 Empire 8 Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading Alfred to its second league title in program history. Wilcox won two games and earned the two-inning save in the 7-5 championship game win over St. John Fisher Saturday. Wilcox opened the week by striking out 11 batters in a two-hit shutout over Russell Sage on Tuesday. She fired a seven-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in a 6-0 win over St. John Fisher Thursday that propelled Alfred into the title round. After suffering a 4-3 loss to Fisher in game one Saturday, Wilcox came on in relief and struck out two batters over the final two innings to preserve a 7-5 victory in the title game. Wilcox, now a five-time Empire 8 weekly honoree in 2021, is 17-4 with 238 strikeouts in 143.1 innings this season.
MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Grant Stokoe, St. John Fisher, Jr., Middle Distance, Cortland, NY/Homer
Stokoe broke the St. John Fisher program record in the 800-meter run for a second time this season at the Roberts Wesleyan Capstone Meet, as he finished the race in 1:53.85 and took third in the day's event. He initially broke the record by .03 seconds on April 23 of this year at the Cardinal Classic with a time of 1:55.56. The junior now moves up the regional leader board with that time and takes hold of the region's sixth best time. It is Stokoe’s second straight E8 weekly accolade.
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Chase Corcoran, St. John Fisher, Sr., Throws, Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles
Corcoran used the Roberts Wesleyan Capstone Meet this past week as preparation for the All-Atlantic Region Championship meet, taking home a pair of first place finishes along the way. The senior tossed for 46.87 meters in the discus throw and for 53.65 meters in the hammer throw, grabbing gold in both events and solidifying a trip to the regional championship in both events and the shot put. It is Corcoran’s third E8 weekly honor of 2021.
WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Abbey Szumloz, Nazareth, Sr., Hurdles, Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse
Szumloz finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Roberts Wesleyan Capstone meet on Friday with a time of 1:06.47 which is a personal record and qualified her for the All-Atlantic Regional meet. Her time is currently seventh in the region.
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jane Fahy, Utica, So., Throws, Oriskany, NY/Oriskany
Fahy improved her school record in the shot put at the Roberts Wesleyan Capstone meet on Friday, launching a 13.18 meter toss to improve on her previous program record of 12.69 meters. She is the first member of the Utica women's track and field program to go over 13 meters in the shot put and is now third in the region and 25th nationally.
