For the seventh time this season, a member of the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College baseball team has received national recognition as graduate student Anthony Brophy was named the National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Wednesday.
With Brophy's selection, the Cardinals are now tied with State University of New York College at Cortland and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) for the most all-time National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division III Hitters, Pitchers, and Rookies of the Week with seven.
Brophy, who was named the Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week on Monday, tossed eight strong innings and allowed just one run on four hits against the Wolves. The lefty finished with 12 strikeouts and did not yield a walk. He is 7-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 1.07 WHIP to go along with 61 strikeouts in 54 innings this season.
The top-seeded Cardinals will look to win their third Empire 8 Championship in team history and first since 2011 when they host third-seeded Utica College on Friday afternoon in the Empire 8 Championship series with two games at Dugan Yard. The doubleheader is set to begin at 12 p.m.
