Senior Bre Socker of the St. John Fisher College field hockey team will be included among the country's top players on Wednesday as the Liverpool, NY native has been selected to participate in the Young Women's National Championship as announced by USA Field Hockey.
"Congratulations to all the players on being selected to compete in the [Young Men's and Women's] National Championship," said Phil Edwards, USA Field Hockey's Senior Manager of Coaching and Performance. "We are looking forward to the return of the women's event with an added twist as the USWNT players join the tournament and in doing so increase both the number of teams and level of competition. On the men's side it is great to get this new tournament and selection opportunity started. We are excited to see the four teams compete across the two divisions and hopefully this can become a fixture of the men's calendar going forward."
The Championship, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, will feature a 10-team pool comprised on the top collegiate and post-collegiate athletes and will also boast current members of the National Development Team and the U.S. Women's National Team.
A four-time First-Team All-Conference honoree, Socker became the third player in program history to be recognized as the conference's Player of the Year in April after leading the Empire 8 with 16 goals, 36 points and 45 shots over six games this season.
Socker, who was named the Empire 8 Championship's Most Valuable Player, scored at least three goals in a game three times and set a single-game record in the semifinal round of the Championship with five goals and 10 points in Fisher's win over Nazareth.
An All-American for the Cardinals, Socker is one of the top scorers to ever play at the Division III level. She became Fisher's all-time leader in points this year with 185 in total while her 77 career goals are second-most in team history.
Socker, who will play for Team Spirit, is scheduled to compete at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Field Two) before returning to action at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday (Field One) and again at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday (Field One). All games on Field One will be live streamed free of charge and can be accessed by
