A trio of Empire 8 student-athletes were selected to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District® Men’s Soccer Teams, which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Keuka College senior Jared Burns and junior Seth Spurgeon, along with Nazareth College senior Justin Pumputis garnered NCAA Division III District 3 honors.
The 2020-21 Academic All-District® Women’s Soccer Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early July.
Burns, a native of Williamsville, NY, has a 3.84 grade-point average as management/sports management major and was named Academic All-District® for the second straight season. Keuka joined the Empire 8 for the 2020-21 season and will make its official debut on the pitch for the 2021 fall season. Burns was named to the Empire 8 President's List for the fall semester was inducted into Keuka’s chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma in 2021. He is also President of Keuka’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
On the field, Burns has appeared in 52 games over his first three seasons with Keuka as a midfielder and has 26 points on eight goals and 10 assists. He recorded a career-high 11 points on three goals and five assists in 2019.
Spurgeon became just the third Keuka College Men's Soccer player to earn Academic All-District, joining Burns and Ben Schreiber. Spurgeon, a junior from Chittenango, NY, is majoring in mathematics and has earned a 3.68 grade point average through three years. He is also a two-sport athlete at Keuka College, playing for the men's lacrosse team as well. Spurgeon has 11 career goals and 23 points in 38 games with the Wolves, including eight goals in 2019.
Pumputis, of Hilton, NY, was a four-time Empire 8 Conference all-star for the Golden Flyers as a defender and earned All-Empire 8 first team honors in 2019 and 2021. He played in 61 career games and produced five goals and two assists. He also helped the Golden Flyers capture the E8 Championship in 2019. In the classroom, Pumputis is a business management major with a 3.41 grade-point average.
The Division II and III CoSIDA Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs. The NAIA CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA national office.
