Six From Empire 8 Named 2021 USTFCCCA Division III Women’s Track and Field All-Academic Athletes

Brenna Johnson and Lea Richard of Nazareth College, Riley Corey and Michaela Kurbs of St. John Fisher College and Cora Maxwell and Kelsey Wands of Utica College were named 2021 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women’s Track and Field All-Academic Athletes.
 
Overall, there were more than 650 women who were named All-Academic Athletes in NCAA Division III Track & Field. In order to qualify, the following criteria must be met.
  • Minimum CUMULATIVE grade point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale through the most recently completed grading period.
  • Graduate students must take all undergraduate plus graduate coursework into account.
  • Meet one of the following athletic criteria:
    • Must have finished the indoor season among the top 50 individuals as listed on the descending order lists on TFRRS. In addition, any athletes not among the top 50, but who participated at the Indoor or Outdoor National Championships, are eligible
    • Must have competed as a member of one of the top 35 relay teams as listed on the indoor descending order list on TFRRS. In addition, any athletes not among the top 35 relay teams, but who participated in the relay at the Indoor or Outdoor National Championships, are eligible. Finally, any competing relay team member on an expanded descending order list to include 35 institutions (1 relay team per institution) is eligible.
Johnson qualified for nationals and earned All-Region honors in the long jump after recording a personal-best leap of 5.76 meters on May 20 at the All-Atlantic Region Championships. Johnson, a junior, recorded the third best jump in the region and 13th best in Division III this season. An accomplished sprinter, who only began jumping in April, Johnson has enjoyed an excellent 2021 season, having won Track Athlete of the Meet honors at both the Empire 8 Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championship Meets.
 
Richard posted a top throw of 43.30 in the hammer throw on April 19 at RIT. She finished third in the same event and fifth overall in the shot put at the Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 7-8. She qualified for the All-Academic Team by posting the 45th best throw nationally in the weight throw in winning the event at the Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 19.
 
Corey, a sophomore, was named the 2021 Empire 8 Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. Corey won the 10,000-meter run at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championship at her home course on May 19, crossing the finish line nearly nine seconds in front of her nearest competitor in a time of 37:52.10, which was a personal best by nearly 50 seconds. Her time was the fifth best in the region to earn USTFCCA All-Region honors and 43rd best in all of Division III during the outdoor season. Corey won the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races at the Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 7-8 and was the 2021 Empire 8 Spring Cross Country Runner of the Year.
 
Kurbs, a freshman posted the 44th best long jump in Division III with a leap of 5.52 meters at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championship at her home course on May 19. She also excelled at the Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, earning a victory in the 4 x 100-meter dash and placing third overall in the 200-meters.
 
Maxwell placed fifth overall in the heptathlon at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championship on May 19-20 with a personal best score of 3,747 points. She was third in both the 400-meter hurdles and 4 x 400-meter dash at the Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She recorded the 25th best score nationally in the pentathlon during the indoor season to qualify.
 
Wands, the 2021 Empire 8 Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the high jump and entered nationals with the second-best performance in the event with a career-best jump of 5.84 meters to finish as the regional runner-up. She was the 2021 Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Champion in the event as well. Wands also earned 2019-20 USTFCCCA Indoor All-Region honors in the long jump.
