Elmira Downs Cazenovia in Straight Sets as Pat Thompson Court is Revealed

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- On the night of the revealing of Pat Thompson Court in front of a raucous Soaring Eagle crowd, the Elmira College women's volleyball team defeated Cazenovia in straight sets. The first two sets showed to be a close competition as the Purple & Gold won 26-19 and 25-17 but they found their groove in the final set, winning 25-8. Maddie Hampton '24 had six total service aces including four in row late in the final set to put the game away. Elmira compiled an impressive 29 kills, 17 aces, and five blocks. Cassidy Ryan '24 contributed heavily to the success, totalling 18 assists and five aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first set saw Elmira take an early 4-0 advantage, forcing a Wildcats timeout. Out of the break, Elmira extended their lead to nine at 15-6. Ryan was a big part of establishing the lead with three service aces over five straight serves. Sam Sprague '22 added a kill and block during the run. Cazenovia would cut the EC lead back down to four at 23-19 before the Soaring Eagles scored back-to-back points to take the set.

The Wildcats would continue their strong play as they started the second set with a four point lead. Despite the early rally, Elmira would respond - tying the score at eight before the game remained in balance of the next few serves. As Ryan came to serve, she quickly picked up two service aces and gave the Soaring Eagles a three point lead. Elmira would not lose their lead and cruised to a 25-17 second-set victory.

The momentum from the end of the second set continued in the third with the Purple & Gold flying out to a 15-5 lead. Hampton would rattle off four service aces, followed by a kill from Delaney Johnson '23 and one more service ace to take a commanding 20-5 lead before taking the set 25-8.

Elmira is back in action next weekend at the Oswego State Invitational, playing four games over two days. The first game is Friday, September 17th vs Potsdam. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
