PITTSFORD, NY – Make it two wins in 24 hours. The Hartwick women's tennis team followed up yesterday's home win against Plattsburgh by making the long drive to Rochester for their Empire 8 opener against St. John Fisher. The Hawks came away with a big 5-4 win, downing a Cardinals team just two seasons removed from a conference title. 'Wick is now 2-1 on the year, while Fisher drops to 0-2.

The Hawks grabbed two of three available points in doubles play. Top pairing Victoria Wilson (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic Academy) and Jade Killikelly (Jamaica, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) beat Mikayla Santulli and Kathryn Strait, 8-6, while at third doubles Jess Sexton (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) and Jessica Best (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie) came away victorious by the same 8-6 score.

'Wick dropped the top three singles matches, and so needed all three wins they got at fourth, fifth, and sixth singles. Sexton and Madison Galvin were tied at six games apiece in the fourth matchup before Galvin had to retire due to injury. Colleen Marsh (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) dropped the first set at fifth singles, 6-4, before taking the next two by twin 6-3 scores. Best rounded out singles at sixth with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory over Elizabeth Schneider.

The Hawks are off until next Friday, when they travel to Oswego for a 4 p.m. match.
