HOUGHTON, NY– The Houghton College Men's soccer team opened up Empire 8 play Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over the Pioneers

The first half started off slow as both teams tried to figure the other out and gain an advantage in some way. That advantage would soon favor the Highlanders as they scored off the foot of Gabriel Vanwyk in the 24th minute of the match. This would be the only goal of the half and ultimately give Houghton a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room.

The second half began with the same method of both teams attempting to gain an advantage while also avoiding exposing themselves. However, The momentum would shift in Utica's favor as they would benefit from an own goal scored by the Highlanders in the 84th minute of the match. The final 6 minutes would tick off as neither team was able to gain the advantage, thus leading us to overtime

The Highlanders would come out quickly, only needing two minutes in OT for Andy Loomis to score the Golden Goal and give the Highlanders their first win of the season and conference. With the win, the Highlanders improve to 1-5 on the season. The Highlanders will take a break from conference play as they suit up against Pitt-Brad on Tuesday on Burke Field.
