ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team defeated Russell Sage College 5-2 at Yunevich Stadium Saturday afternoon, opening up Empire 8 action.
The Saxons (5-2-2) faced a 2-0 deficit early in the first half but ended the first 45 with momentum after
Katline Cartwright (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy) headed in a ball off a corner kick pass by
Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia), making it 2-1 in favor of the Gators going into halftime.
Once the second half got started, Alfred was continued their tempo of play, as they scored four more unanswered goals in the second half, closing out the E8 win.
Abigail Austin (Hornell, NY) scored the first goal of the second half, tying the game at two goals, apiece.
Nyah Solly (Colden, NY) would be credited with the game-winning goal in the 59
th minute of play off yet another corning kick, from
Palmgreen.
Alyssa Smith (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River scored another goal in the 64
th minutes, making it a 4-2 game in favor of the Saxons off a long shot.
Claire Squicciarini (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) ended the scoring with a goal in the 73
rd minute off an assist from
Sophia Carretto (Canisteo, NY/Hornell).
"We did well to bounce back after being down 2-0. At halftime we stressed that we were playing well and that we let in two unfortunate goals. We knew if we cleaned up our play that we were going to get chances," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "The offense was much better today. We continue to work in our attacking play everyday at training. We have grown a tremendous amount in this area but feel with continued work we can keep improving."
Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) got the win in goal as she made four saves while only allowing two goals.
Alfred University will be coming back to Yunevich Stadium to compete against the Medaille Mavericks Wednesday, September 29 at 7:00PM.
