This year, Empire 8 will expand its postseason tournaments for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball from four to five teams, as voted on by the league’s Athletic Directors and approved by the Empire 8 President’s Council. In 2020-21, the Empire 8 expanded all tournaments on a one-time/emergency basis to six teams to offset the impact of inequitable results due to COVID. This year’s limited expansion is the first non-emergent growth in the conference’s 23-year history as a multi-sport conference.
Postseason season tournaments for the 2021-22 season are expanding for those five sports, as each features the maximum nine teams competing. Baseball, field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball, and men’s and women’s tennis will remain as four-team championship tournaments.
Empire 8 recently announced the addition of Medaille College effective 2022-23 and will examine the appropriate conference championship field size as the league reaches 10 members, its largest in history.
Empire 8 Championships for the 2021-22 season will begin on Oct. 2-3 with the fall portion of the men’s golf championship. The first Empire 8 team champion of the year will be crowned Oct. 15-16, as women’s tennis competes at Houghton College.
