Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on January 3, 2022, for games played from December 13-January 2. It is the 16th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2021-22 season. Sports featured include men’s and women’s basketball.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Stephen Gabel, Nazareth, Gr., G, Victor, NY/Fairport
Gabel helped the Golden Flyers to a pair of non-league wins last week at the Music City Classic in Nashville. He had game-highs of 25 and 20 points in wins over Edgewood and Carroll respectively. He went 15-for-24 from the field (.625) and 13-for-15 from the free throw line (.867). Gabel also had 15 rebounds in the two games as Nazareth improved to 8-1 overall. It is Gabel’s third E8 weekly honor of the season.
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Thomas Morreale, Utica, Jr., F, Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro
Morreale recorded a game high 23 points on 55 percent shooting (11-of-20), seven rebounds and an assist in Utica’s 90-77 win over Alfred State on December 29. It is his second E8 weekly honor of the 2021-22 season.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Griffin Barasa, Utica, Fr., G, Clearwater, FL/Calvary Christian
Barasa totaled four points, four assists, three steals and a rebound in 17 minutes in Utica’s 90-77 win over Alfred State on December 29.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Miyah Sizer, Nazareth, Sr., G, Rochester, NY/Brighton
Sizer lifted Nazareth to an 86-62 non-league win over Alfred State last Thursday, December 30, as she produced a game and season-high 19 points. Her stat line included four made 3-pointers, five assists and two steals as Nazareth won its fourth straight contest to improve to 5-4 overall.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Isabella Astorino, So., F, Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley
Astorino scored 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the foul line to go along with six rebounds and two assists in Hartwick’s 76-61 win over Morrisville State on December 13.
