UTICA, NY - The Utica College women's basketball team kept its streak alive as it downed visiting Elmira College 81-50 in the Empire 8 Conference opener Friday evening to improve to 10-0 to start the year. The bigger story however was senior Sydney Przygoda recording her 1,000th career point for the Pioneers.
The only time Elmira led in the game was off the opening possession just 20 seconds into the contest, but it was short-lived as Utica went on to take a 22-8 lead after the first quarter and a 44-24 lead at halftime. UC was bolstered by an explosive performance by Petrina DeMarco who shot 7-of-10 in the first half including five three-pointers.
After a slow start, Przygoda turned it on in the second half, netting 16 of her game-high 22 points in the final 20 minutes. She became just the 14th
player in program history and 61st in Empire 8 women's basketball history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her career as she has netted 1,009 points in just 61 games in the Orange and Blue. Przygoda also finished with 12 rebounds, marking her third straight double-double and sixth on the year.
DeMarco finished with a season-high 21 points, just three shy of her career-best. Cora Sawyer chipped in with 11 points and five boards, while Brigid Johndrow had seven points to go along with her team-leading 10 assists and six steals.
Utica also had scoring from Kristine Miller, Kelsey Carter, Logan Taylor, Krissy Geraci, and Julianna Beaulieu.
The Pioneers, who are off to their best start to a season in program history look to keep the momentum going as they host Keuka College on Saturday. The Empire 8 Conference matchup is scheduled for 2 p.m.
