ALFRED, NY – A strong defensive effort from the Alfred University women's soccer team resulted in a 1-0 win over Utica University on Saturday evening from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (5-4, 2-1 Empire 8) put across 12 shots, four of which were on goal. The Pioneers (2-6-1, 1-1 Empire 8) were limited to just one corner kick opportunity.

Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) scored once from a team-high five shots. Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) finished with four shots, one being on goal. Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) picked up four saves in the win for AU.

"It was great to be back home playing in front of our fans," Graduate Assistant Coach Danielle Perry said. "Their energy and support made the difference tonight. Being able to pick up a conference win in front of our home crowd made the win extra special."

The Saxons offense found opportunities early in the first half offensively, earning a corner kick opportunity within the first minute of action. Despite taking four shots, Alfred University entered halftime with a scoreless draw. A breakaway opportunity for Scanlan in the 55th minute allowed the ball to find the left side of the net, as the Saxons got themselves on the scoreboard. The defense for AU limited Utica to just three shots in the second half to hold onto the win.

"In these next couple road games, we look to continue to build on our offensive momentum," Perry said. "We had some great chances tonight, but we need to continue to focus and put the ball in the net."

Alfred University will next travel to face Ithaca College in a non-conference matchup. The first half is slated to begin at 4:00 PM.
