HOUGHTON, NY – The Medaille University men's soccer team won in a convincing fashion over the Houghton Highlanders. The Mavericks won 6-1.
The Highlanders came out strong getting a corner kick at 1:39. They got a shot off, but the defense was able to block it. The Mavs brought it down the field from there and
Henry Allan (St. Catherines, ON, Sir Winston Churchill) was able to get a shot off of a corner kick, but the goalie got a hold of it. At 4:52, the Highlanders were the first to get on the board.
Two minutes later, the Mavs came back.
Rodrigo Perez (Palencia, Spain, IES Victorio Macho) netted the goal at 6:54. The Mavs kept up the offense with
Jhon Solis (Humaco, Puerto Rico, Escuela Virtual de Puerto Rico) and
Ben Marrable (Southend, England, Southend High School for Boys) getting shots off.
Houghton was able to get the ball down the field again, but Medaille struck again at 28:39.
Rodrigo Fernandez (Zaragoza, Spain, ) headed the ball into the net off of a corner kick from
Samuel Wickins (St. Merryn, United Kingdom, Truro College). The Highlanders regrouped and took three shots. Keeper
David Mighten (Nottingham, England, The Westbridgford) made two saves. The Mavs took the ball back and got another corner opportunity off of a shot from Fernandez.
Celso Juberias (Zaragoza, Spain, Liceo Europa) was the goal scorer this time off of the corner from Fernandez.
At 40:29,
James Salvatore (Sutton, MA, Sutton) scored the fourth goal for the Mavs. That would finish it out for the half, and the Mavs were in the lead 4-1.
Solomon Konesky (Buffalo, NY, Amherst) got involved immediately after the start of the half. He took a quick shot, but it hit the crossbar. Minutes later, the Mavs had four corner kicks in a row. Fernandez finished them out win a goal at 52:44. The Mavericks were dominating the possession game from here. The Mavs scored their final goal at 72:34 off of a foul in the box.
Bryce Koagel (West Monroe, NY, Paul V. Moore) was the one fouled, so he took the shot and found the back of the net. This would finish out the excitement, and the Mavs took the win 6-1.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Fernandez with one goal, one assist, and two shots on goal, Wickins with one goal on two shots on goal and an assist, and Mighten with five saves.
The Mavs are coming back home on Wednesday, October 26. They will face St. John Fisher at 7:00 p.m.
