St. John Fisher Draws with Nazareth To Clinch 2022 Empire 8 Men's Soccer Regular Season Championship

ROCHESTER, NY - The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team traveled down the road Saturday to take on Nazareth College. After 90 minutes of play, the game ended in a 1-1 draw, both team took 13 shots throughout the game. The Cardinals end their regular season 7-5-3 and 6-2-1 in the conference. With this tie, Fisher claims the No.1 seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship Tournament. The Golden Flyers hold a 7-4-5 record and are 2-2-5 in conference play.

The first opportunity for Fisher came two minutes in, Matt Gentile took a shot to the bottom center of the goal. Fisher had three more scoring chances before Nazareth took their first shot of the day. A back and forth first half lead to shots on goal by Trevor Heschke, Ben Woolingham, Justin Bonetto and Tim Brown. The defense held strong, Jadon Schlierf had four saves off of six shots in the first half. The first 45 minutes ended and the two teams remained scoreless. 

As the second half began, Brown took the first shot for the Cardinals at the 55 minute mark. The shot lead to a corner kick for Fisher, which created an opportunity for Riley Rease to get a chance for Fisher. The Golden Flyers were first to get on the board at the 61st minute. No time was wasted for Fisher to take the momentum back. Just two minutes later Bonetto scored off a Fisher corner kick, tying the game at one a piece. The Cardinals created two more chances to get on top throughout the last 30 minutes. Heschke took a shot to the bottom right corner that was saved by the Nazareth goalie. The last opportunity to pull away was by Nick Rippe who missed just wide. The Cardinals finished the second half with five shots and six corner kick opportunity's. The Fisher defense kept the Golden Flyers from adding another tally with solid defensive play, as well as Schlierf having four second half saves. As 90 minutes concluded, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Up next for Fisher is the 2022 Empire 8 Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. The Cardinals hold the top seed in the tournament, and with that ranking they will host the winner of the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in a semifinal match up on Thursday, Nov. 3. at Growney Stadium.
