WASHINGTON, PA -- The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team rode a pair of first half goals to a 2-1 victory over St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 Conference match Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.
The win improves the Presidents to 4-2 in E8 play and 5-6 overall. St. John Fisher, the two-time defending conference champions, drops to 3-2 in the conference and 4-8 overall.
Both teams tallied late scores in the opening quarter to knot things up at 1-1 after 15 minutes of play. St. John Fisher scored first when Molly Fisher found the back of the cage in the 13th minute. Senior Lindsey Diggan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Governor Mifflin) helped the Presidents answer just 40 seconds later. A penalty corner opportunity led to Diggan's goal, which was assisted by freshman Lindsey Blount (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint). The goal was the fourth of the week for Diggan.
W&J took the lead for good in the early stages of the third quarter. Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored an unassisted goal just three-plus minutes into the second quarter. Wachowiak's goal was her Empire 8 leading 15th of the season.
The Presidents carried the one-goal lead into halftime. Neither team was able to find the back of the cage over the final 30 minutes. St. John Fisher had four penalty corner opportunities and three shots in the fourth but W&J denied them a chance at tying the score.
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) registered six saves to earn the victory in goal. Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md. / Broadneck), Grace Kirwin (Philadelphia, Pa. / Abington) and Bailey Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) backed Godat's strong effort.
St. John Fisher held a 18-14 advantage in shots and a decisive 18-9 margin in penalty corners but the W&J defense proved resilient in the victory.
W&J travels into Ohio for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 12 against Wooster. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
